10 years of home care

The public social welfare Ljubljana Home Care Institute is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its operations.

The basic activity of the Ljubljana Home Care Institute, which was set up by the City of Ljubljana in May 2002, is to ease the daily lives of the elderly in their own homes as part of public services by helping with daily tasks, household assistance and the preservation of social contact. Institute services are run throughout the territory of the City of Ljubljana.

Social home care is intended for beneficiaries who have accommodation and other requisites for life in their domestic environment but due to old age, disability or chronic illness are unable to care for themselves. In this way, for a specific period, beneficiaries avoid the need for institutional care or other organised care forms.

The direct provision of these services at home runs from 6am to 10pm, every day of the year up to a maximum of 20 hours a week.

The beneficiaries of Home Care Institute services are:

• those aged 65 or over who are not capable of totally independent living,
• those that are legally registered as disabled under the Act Concerning Social Care of Mentally and Physically Handicapped Persons, if the level and type of their disability permits occasional home care,
• other people with disabilities granted the right to receive assistance and care to perform the majority of life functions,
• chronically ill and people with long term damage to their health.

The City of Ljubljana subsidises the costs of these services to a total of 80%.
