Accessible tourism in ljubljana
On 21 February, the International Tourist Guide Day, professional guides took people with developmental disorders, physical disabilities, the deaf and the hard of hearing, as well as the blind and the partially sighted on a free of charge sightseeing tour around Ljubljana.
This type of guided tours was organised for the second consecutive year by the Slovenian Association of Tourist Guides and the Premiki Institute.
The guided tour started in front of Pod Trančo at Stari Trg 2 and took the visitors to see the City Hall, the Saint Nicholas Cathedral, the Butchers' Bridge, the Triple Bridge and the Prešeren, Congress and Novi Trg squares.
Ljubljana is constantly devoting attention to people with disabilities and is striving to improve the accessibility for the disabled. In 2009, Ljubljana became the first city in Slovenia to receive the "Local Authority Tailor-Made For People With Disabilities" certificate. In December 2011, the City of Ljubljana was also attributed a special mention from the »Access City Award 2012« jury (European Commission initiative) for transport and related infrastructures (buses fitted with audio and video stop announcements, Braille signs at bus stops and the city centre tactile map). Last year, Ljubljana received the Eurocities 2013 award in Ghent for the project entitled "Providing Safety and Equal Opportunities in Traffic for Children & People with Disabilities" in the "Smart Living" category. The project encompasses the door-to-door transport service for the disabled provided by the Ljubljana Passenger Transport and the education and schooling programme offering the depiction of safe routes to school maintained by the Pre-School Education and Schooling Department of the City of Ljubljana Administration.
The awards and achievements Ljubljana has received so far in the field of accessibility for the disabled are a great recognition of our efforts to improve the quality of life of our citizens, especially its most vulnerable groups, and a strong motivation to continue working on our endeavours.
