Bee Path in Ljubljana

In Ljubljana the Bee Path came to life, connecting different institutions linked to Ljubljana’s beekeeping tradition and suppliers of honey and bee products.

The Bee Path was created as a learning path where visitors can discover the beekeeping heritage in Ljubljana and the significance of bees for our survival. It leads through the city centre and connects various points important for their cultural and natural heritage. It also encompasses suppliers of honey and bee products in the rural parts of the City of Ljubljana. With its innovative approach the Bee Path has a big potential for tourism, it increases the visibility of local suppliers and beekeeping products, and introduces honey from Ljubljana as a recognisable and independent product. The beekeeping tradition in Ljubljana and on its outskirts goes back to the times of prehistoric settlements, and now there are as many as 3 % of all Slovenian beekeepers, with over 4,500 beehives, active in the area of the City of Ljubljana. And the honey produced in the City of Ljubljana is of high quality. Together with the beekeepers the City of Ljubljana is looking after the bees by planting many perennial honey plants on its public surfaces.
