Cyclist, give pedestrians the right-of-way!

For over a decade the city centre of Ljubljana has been reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. We are continuously striving to ensure a safe and pleasant coexistence of all users of this area, and for this reason we are offering advice on the proper and safe behaviour in traffic by carrying out different preventive and awareness-raising activities.

Warmer weather is again brining more cyclists to the streets, that is why we have put up new signs on the edges of the pedestrian area to remind them of the importance of safety for cyclists and pedestrians alike.

Namely, cycling is allowed in the pedestrian area but cyclists must lower their speed to match the pedestrians’ pace.

Ljubljana is a bicycle friendly city

In the past years we have carried out numerous infrastructural improvements and measures with which we are encouraging cycling in Ljubljana.

In 2015, Ljubljana first made it onto the list of top 20 bicycle friendly cities in the world taking the 13th place, and in 2017 it improved its ranking when it took the 8th place high on the list »Copenhagenize Bicycle Friendly Cities Index 2017«.

Significantly contributing to the popularisation of cycling is also the self-service bicycle rental system BicikeLJ which is complementing the public transfer system in Ljubljana and is an environmentally friendly form of mobility. Ljubljana is ranking first in the world with regard to the use of the BicikeLJ system, as each bicycle is used as many as eight times a day, on average.

Since 2011, when the system was launched, almost 6 million bicycle rentals have been recorded. At the beginning we set up 30 stations and based on excellent results we have expanded the network to 59 stations with 590 bicycles, which were made available at the end of last year.
