International Day of Persons with Disabilities

3 December is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which aims to promote understanding, support for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities and raise awareness on the benefits of their integration into all aspects of political, social, economic and cultural life.

In the years since the ratification of the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2008, Slovenia has successfully adopted a wide range of legislation in this field. In Ljubljana, we are addressing the implementation of commitments from the convention and related legislative regulations with very concrete solutions and incentives that contribute to improving the accessibility of the built environment, public transport, information and a variety of services and programs.

In ensuring accessibility of the city for people with disabilities, Ljubljana ranks at the very top of Europe, as evidenced by our high placings in the annual European Commission competition "Access City Award" for cities accessible to people with disabilities and the elderly, the highest being the second place or silver award at the Access City Award 2018.

Carefully planned solutions

The solutions that we are introducing in various areas of life in Ljubljana are carefully planned and intended to ensure that everyone – regardless of personal circumstances – has the opportunity to be equally involved in the life of the city. Accessibility is regulated and guaranteed for people with impairments and not only for people with disabilities or people with a disability status under current legislation. In addition, many of us experience impairments at least occasionally or we may at some time in the future, either due to injury, illness or age. If the standard term disabled person remains only in legal use, while in other areas and everyday life we all try to use less personal designations, we believe that solutions that are actually intended to strengthen social inclusion and successful coexistence in diversity will come to life more effortlessly and in a greater scope.
