Ljubljana once again among the most sustainable destinations in the world

For the eighth year in a row, Ljubljana has made it on the list of Top 100 Destination Sustainability Stories, making it the only city in the world to receive this title for already the eighth time.

This time, the international expert jury was convinced by the project Digital innovation of Plečnik's heritage.

The list of Top 100 Destination Sustainability Stories (initially named Global Top 100 Sustainable Destinations) highlights the most sustainable destinations in the world based on success stories of responsible tourism development. It is compiled by the Green Destinations organization. All the destinations included in the list, with their work and described approaches, create a high-quality environment for local residents and, at the same time, an attractive experience for visitors. Their stories serve as inspiration for other destinations, and by selecting them for the Top 100 list, the organization has been promoting them in the international tourism sector since 2014. Since then, Ljubljana has been repeatedly included in the list, putting it at the very top of those awarded most often for achievements in the field of sustainable tourism.

Marked by Plečnik

This year, the international expert jury was convinced by the project Digital innovation of five units of Plečnik's immovable cultural heritage in the area of the City of Ljubljana and the Central Slovenia region, with which Ljubljana Tourism has digitized five of Plečnik's works with 360-degree photographs, 3D scanning and 3D modeling. Then they created another 5-star experience – a boutique guided tour of Plečnik's works, Master Plečnik, which, in addition to viewing Plečnik's main sights in the centre of the capital, also offers a virtual walk through digitized units outside the city centre and in the Central Slovenia region. The entire project was upgraded with the augmented reality experience provided by Plečnik's visions – a gamified tour of the great architect's unrealized projects. Plečnik's visions also recently won first place in the tourism category at this year's Slovenia's outstanding digital achievements competition WEBSI.

Ljubljana Tourism regularly develops innovative, technologically advanced experiential tourist tours of the city, highlighting sustainable lifestyle elements, such as getting to know the local cultural heritage. They are used to guide visitors outside the city centre and show them locations that are more difficult to access.
