New P+R Barje

The City of Ljubljana has opened the new P+R Barje at the Barjanska Street. Next to the parking area is the line No. 9 bus stop.

With the new parking area the P+R network on the outskirts of Ljubljana is expanding. Now it already encompasses 5 parking areas (in addition to Barje, P+R Dolgi most, P+R Stožice, P+R Studenec and P+R Ježica), and with them Ljubljana is implementing measures for reducing the number of vehicles in the city centre in line with its commitment to sustainable development and within the framework of its title European Green Capital 2016. Namely, the main purpose of P+R parking areas is to stop personal vehicles on the outskirts of the city and re-direct passengers from personal vehicles to city passenger traffic buses.

P+R Barje

The new parking area P+R Barje is located next to the main road entering Ljubljana from the south, the Barjanska Street, and serves as a connection point between the state and the city road network. The operator in charge of the first construction phase of the parking area was Trograd d.o.o. The works began at the end of May 2015, and the construction was influenced especially by the soft marsh soil, therefore a 13,000 m2 concrete foundation slab supported by 1117 columns had to be built. All necessary installations were laid on top of the slab – sewerage, public lighting, optical cables for Urbanomats and the self service bicycle rental system Bicike(LJ) station.
P+R Barje has 347 parking spaces for personal vehicles, 17 of them reserved for people with disabilities. There are 2 charging stations for simultaneous charging of 4 vehicles, 68 bicycle racks and 10 sheltered bicycle racks (altogether 156 stands for parking bicycles). A Bicike(LJ) station with 20 stands is also set up at the parking area. In addition, a kiosk selling newspapers and magazines will be set up and a fast-food kiosk is also planned. There are approximately 100 trees planted at the parking area which will provide shade for the parked vehicles.
The parking area is well connected to the city centre with a new No. 9 bus stop in its vicinity.
The project for the construction and equipment of P+R Barje was partially financed from the European Union Cohesion Fund, namely within the framework of the Operational Programme of Environmental and Transport Infrastructure Development 2007–2013, second development priority “Road and Maritime Infrastructure – public passenger transport”. The value of the overall investment was 3,078,895.00 € with VAT, co-financed from the European Cohesion Fund in the amount of 57 percent of the value, that is, 1,388,000.00 €, the remaining funds were provided from the budget of the City of Ljubljana.
