Pride Parade 2020: »LGBT+ rights now«

The conditions due to the coronavirus affected many events, among them the traditional pride parade which instead in June is going to be held in Ljubljana this Saturday, 26 September 2020.

Most of the pride parades across the world were cancelled, some were held online, and in Slovenia the event was postponed to this Saturday, 26 September 2020.

The slogan of this year’s Pride Parade is »LGBTIQ+ rights now«

Non-governmental organisations are stressing there is no progress in the area of LGBT+ rights, and hatred towards the LGBT+ community is rising. For instance, some local communities in Poland declared »LGBT-free areas«. As a rainbow city we reacted to this, the Mayor sent a letter to the Polish Ambassador to Slovenia and joint an open letter addressed to local and regional elected representatives of Poland on the initiative of the Secretary General of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions Frederic Vallier and the Chair of the Standing Committee for Equality Emil Broberg.

Many activities have already been carried out within the framework of the pride parade – different round tables and online talks, a photo exhibition. In June the City Hall hosted an exhibition on the 20 years of the pride parade in Ljubljana in which all pride parades since 2001 were presented (the virtual exhibition is available here).

Due to the current health situation this year’s pride parade is going to be held in a different way than usually. It is going to take place in the form of 10 consecutive smaller assemblies representing one of the colours in the rainbow flag. During this time the rainbow flag is also hanging on the City Hall.
