United with shopkeepers and caterers against plastic bags in Ljubljana

The City of Ljubljana is striving to reduce the use of plastic bags, also in cooperation with shopkeepers and caterers in the city centre of Ljubljana. Many of them are already offering paper shopping bags, which we appreciate and support, and that is why we are encouraging others who have still not adopted this behaviour to do so.

We have called upon retailers and restaurants in the city centre to offer only paper or biodegradable bags to their customers instead of plastic bags. Over 40 shopkeepers and caterers have joined us already, we are presenting them on a prominently featured subpage and they have already received or will soon get a special sticker informing customers that they are not using plastic bags. We are inviting all other retailers and restaurants to cooperate.

Namely, as a public opinion survey conducted in 2017 has revealed, the majority of Ljubljana’s citizens (as many as 86 percent) support the introduction of biodegradable bags. It should also not be ignored, that according to the assessment of the European Commission each resident in Slovenia uses 466 single-use bags per year, placing a heavy burden on the environment.

Within the scope of the year-long programme of the European Green Capital in 2016, the City of Ljubljana, in cooperation with public companies LPT and Snaga, has developed a campaign against plastic bags with the slogan »I’m not lasting, but therefore less annoying. I’m a biodegradable bag.«
