Unveiling of the monument dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Prekmurje

In Prekmurje Square, on 17 August 2020, on the holiday marking the unification of Prekmurje with the mother nation, we unveiled the monument dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of Prekmurje and the unification of Prekmurje Slovenians with the mother nation.

The artistic solution for the monument was selected in an anonymous open competition, in which an expert jury chose the proposal by academic sculptor Zoran Srdić Janežič with Cveto Kunešević as the co-author and Tomaž Košir as the designer of the inscription on the monument.

The monument consists of about 340 vessels distributed on a surface spreading 15 m in length and 5 m in width. It is set up at the end of the gallery at the edge of the platform in Prekmurje Square; representing an important emphasis in space and at the same time bringing additional meaning.

The design of high artistic quality, which inclusively addresses the observer with the layout of the vessels from individual to the joined ones representing the community. The story of unification is implied in the transition from Prekmurje to the Motherland in the base of the solution. The whole works as a mosaic elevated from the floor level. The strong symbolism of Slovenian pottery develops as a metaphor of a pottery market at the edge of the square. The advantage of the sculpture is also that one can step into it and experience it physically.

Mayor Zoran Janković: "We are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Prekmurje joining the Motherland and this will last despite of the maps our neighbours are drawing."

At the 100th anniversary of uniting the Prekmurje region and Slovenes in Prekmurje with the Motherland in 2019, we opened the Prekmurje Square at the crossroads of Poljane and Rozman Street and the Poljane Embankment. With the Prekmurje Square we gained more quality public space for socialising and open-air events.
