Volunteers at stožice

On Saturday 1 June 2013, the main hall at Stožice Sports Centre was the venue of a familiarisation day for volunteers that are to assist in the organisation of the EuroBasket 2013 tournament.

The familiarisation day welcomed 700 registered volunteers, to whom the local organising committee introduced themselves, outlined details about event organisation and the nature of the work that they will be involved in prior to and during the championships.

The event was livened up by volunteer games in which the volunteer candidates competed amongst themselves in tasks that await them at EuroBasket 2013. Mascot Lipko and Slovene basketball star Marko Milič had a little friendly competition in scoring free throws. Lipko performed outstandingly well and drew 1-1 with the ex-Slovenian player, delighting the crowd.

That the volunteers are well-aware of their mission is proven by two of them who jumped to support the carrying out of the familiarisation day. "I’ve spent half my life working in basketball, my favourite sport. I’m happy to be able to help make it the best tournament yet" said Sandra, while Klemen added "I’d say the core values of volunteering are hospitality, friendliness and openness. The goal is to present Slovenia to foreigners in a good light, as a country of friendly people, where they will feel at home. Volunteering has brought me a lot of good things, lots of friends and acquaintances that I have got to know. We get together in our spare time".

Volunteers from other countries were not at this get together, as the organisers didn’t want to burden them with unnecessary costs, and thus the selection process for foreign volunteers will differ significantly from that of their Slovene counterparts.

For all those that have registered as prospective volunteers at EuroBasket 2013 but were unable to attend the first familiarisation day, the local organising committee have arranged a reserve day, which is at Ježica on Saturday 15 June.
