Water is our common responsibility

On 22 March, World Water Day, Ljubljana's VO – KA public company highlighted the innovations it employed to symbolically unite with other activities going on around Slovenia and the world on that day.

As a tribute to water, which is as much an important element in the urban environment today as it has always been, VO-KA showcased its new web application entitled 'Roman Emona'.

The application points up the remarkable construction achievements by and awareness among the people of Emona on the importance of hygiene for residents' health. Emona's people, whose Roman settlement was on the territory where Ljubljana is today, already had managed water supplies and sewerage as early as the days of the Roman Caesars and the remains of both systems are still visible in Ljubljana.

On World Water Day, VO-KA published a pamphlet in Slovene entitled 'With you at every step. Get to know us', which supplements their series of educational brochures on the theme of water.

One of VO-KA's important standing tasks is to inform the youngest children about the drinking water and sewerage systems and raise awareness among them on the importance of protecting and preserving water sources.

In order to facilitate easier communication with young people, some time ago they created a mascot called Cevko, who has become much loved. They also regularly supplement and upgrade the content on the Cevko and Primavoda websites and organise events for the youngest children on the drinking water theme.

Water is one of Slovenia's greatest natural assets, and it is worth emphasising that Slovenia's capital has extremely high-quality water sources that are used for the drinking water supply. These are the aquifers at Ljubljansko polje and Ljubljansko barje. These are our precious heritage that we must preserve for future generations. The water which flows from Ljubljana taps does not need any technical measures to clean it, which is an extremely rare thing in Europe.
