What memorial will be erected in the Park of the Erased

The former courtyard of the Rog factory on Trubar Street will be converted into a new public park alongside the renovation of the Rog Centre, which, at the initiative of the proponents, Amnesty International Slovenia and the Civil Initiative of Erased Activists, has been named Park of the Erased, and a memorial will also be erected there.

Twelve solutions were submitted in the competition for the design of conceptual solutions for the memorial in the Park of the Erased, among which the expert jury, comprised of Prof. Janez Koželj, Renata Zamida, Rok Kuhar, Nina Granda, Matej Kučina, Andrej Kurnik, Jerneja Batič, Nataša Posel and Irfan Beširević, chose the best three.

The first prize was awarded to Vuk Ćosić, Aleksandar Vujović and Irena Woelle, who designed the monument in the form of the upper part of the letter ć, which, unlike the South Slavic languages, is unknown to the Slovenian alphabet, which is why it was erased from the surnames in the population register in the zeal of nationalism after winning independence and was replaced with the letter č. Their justification reads: »The memorial in the Park of the Erased symbolically brings back the banished letter and thus shows that Ljubljana wants to be a capital of solidarity and coexistence.«

All solutions submitted in the competition will be exhibited in the Historical Atrium of the City Hall until 8. March 2023. The exhibition is part of a series of events commemorating the 31st anniversary of the illegal deletion of 25,671 people from the population register of Slovenia.
