Read more > The City of Ljubljana has decided to modernise Ljubljana's central market, build an underground garage and set up a friendly place for both visitors and sellers.We received the prestigious international Gubbio award in the category of architecture for the renovation of Congress Square and the revitalisation of archaeological parks. The square regained its importance as a central area for numerous cultural and sporting events. It is also a place where foreign dignitaries are hosted. The renovation of the central market has a similar significance for its future development. The purpose of the renovation is to improve living and working conditions, as well as the quality of urban space in the vicinity of the Dragon Bridge and Plečnik’s market. At the same time, it is important to preserve cultural heritage and everything that one of the most eminent locations in Ljubljana has to offer. So, what is new? The indoor market will be located in the atrium of the extension of the Mahr House, while the city administration will be located on the upper floors. The relocation of the textile market to the indoor market will facilitate additional space for the central market and make it even greener. The parking garage will provide better working conditions in the central market area, easier access for visitors and a car park for residents. Environmental impacts will also be reduced, as exhaust gases will be diverted through the roof of the extension. Ljubljana has been following the trends of other green European cities that provide car parks at the edge of pedestrian zones. The central market will operate smoothly, with only minor adjustments during construction. The textile market will be located at Petkovšek Embankment, plants on Butcher’s Bridge, vegetables and fruits at Pogačarjev Square, and at Ciril Metod and Krek Square, if necessary. The part of the market located in Plečnik’s Arcades will operate smoothly, as it lies a sufficient distance from the construction site.When the project is finished, it will facilitate a bigger green market according to modern sanitary standards, new premises in the Mahr House and a museum centre depicting archaeology of medieval Ljubljana; and at the same time traffic and logistics will be regulated. The current parking area will become a lively place with a wide range of services for all visitors and particularly for you, the citizens of Ljubljana. < Less

the measures were implemented solely through public tenders, by
employing all available financial incentives. However, in recent
years, we have increased the share of energy retrofits through
public-private partnership arrangements and energy
performance contracting.

In 2017, we signed a concession contract with
the consortium consisting of the companies Petrol
and Resalta to implement energy retrofit measures
in 48 public buildings owned by the City of Ljubljana. < Less

At ... Read more > The project addresses unsolved questions with regard to invasive alien plant species in terms of the zero‑waste approach and circular economy.

At present we are composting or incinerating these plants, and with the pilot project for processing plants into paper at a semi‑industrial level we have proven that they can be utilised for other useful purposes.

The proposed system of managing invasive foreign plants is based on education and cooperation with the citizens of Ljubljana and three principles of operation:

»Do it yourself«,
»Process with us« and
»Bring to the collection centre
We want to make it easier for the citizens of Ljubljana to recognise invasive non-native plant species on their own and then remove and process them into useful products (1). If they do not want to do that by themselves they will be able to go to the newly planned re-use centre where we can process them together in workshops (2) or they can simply bring them to the new collection centre where project partners can process them in to useful products and then sell them (3). The project addresses the widest possible circle of stakeholders: kindergartens, schools, pupils, students, households, property owners, companies, tourists, professional organisations…on centre«.

Read more > Cukrarna has an impressive history, good and bad. It’s life began as a sugar refinery, but fire stopped it’s blooming industry. From then on, Cunkrarna never recovered, even though it was a successful tobacco factory for a short period. Around that time the dark side of Cukrarna began to evolve. Last nail in the coffin for Cukrarna was Ljubljana’s devastating earthquake in 1895 which transformed Cukrarna into a residence on the social margins. As Blaž Vurnik wrote in Cukr magazine: “𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴 - 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘳𝘴. That’s why Cukrarna became the center of social life for writers and poets of Moderna. This is an important added value for our programme which contains numerous pionir projects for Slovenija. For example ECO-C Village in Medvode is a project with a great ambition. Another crucial project is The Pile Dwellers Archaeo-park in Vrhnika. In the area of abandoned brickworks we will present rich pile dwelling heritage in the form of an archaeological park, an open-air experimental museum, first of its kind in Slovenia. There are many more interesting projects within our candidacy awaiting long anticipated realization. Fingers crossed for the win! 💪💚
