70th anniversary of the Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts
The 36th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts – Oracle: On Fantasy and Freedom opened on Friday, 6. June, and will run until 12. October 2025 at several venues in the city, marking its 70th anniversary. The International Centre for Graphic Arts, in collaboration with renowned curator Chus Martínez, has prepared a program at Tivoli Castle, Švicarija, Plečnik Auditorium, Jakopič Promenade, Modern Gallery and City Gallery Ljubljana.
All but two of the works were designed specifically for the biennale, and will therefore be on display for the first time this year.
A parallel program will also take place alongside the main Biennale exhibition. The exhibition will feature Tejswini Narayan Sonawane, the recipient of the Grand Prize of the 35th Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts. The Ljubljana Castle will host an exhibition by the »Sreda v sredo« collective, the recipient of the Audience Award of the previous edition of the Biennale. The National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia will host the exhibition The Beginning of Something Great, which depicts the socio-cultural situation that accompanied the emergence of the Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts.
At the biennale, we argue that every artistic and cultural event is also an oracle, a place where we can think and reflect on how to create the common good, and how to realize a good life based on shared values.
The Ljubljana Biennale of Graphic Arts celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2025. Since its founding in 1955, the Ljubljana Biennale has presented works by approximately 9,000 artists from 122 countries. It has consistently placed Ljubljana and Slovenian art in a global context and co-shaped the international discourse in the field of graphic arts and contemporary art. In 2001, the Biennale began commissioning new works, which was a significant shift from a national selection to a curated exhibition format, and since then 245 new works of art have been created. During this period, 30 curators and 53 exhibition venues have also participated, reflecting the Biennale's continuous development as a space for experimentation, critical reflection and inter-institutional cooperation.
