COP30 Bike Ride cycling relay in Ljubljana

On Friday, 25 July 2025, Mayor Zoran Janković welcomed cyclists from the international Relay for Climate Justice, along with Bicycle Mayor of Ljubljana, Matej Praprotnik, and Iva Zozolly, representative of the Ljubljana Cycling Network, in front of City Hall.

They presented him with a list of proposals for cycling improvements, many of which are already underway in Ljubljana and will continue to be developed. The meeting was held in preparation for the COP30 climate conference, which will take place in Brazil in November 2025, and for the symbolic event, COP30 Bike Ride – Cycling for Climate Justice, to be held in Slovenia.

In Ljubljana, we ensure the regular implementation of cycling measures

In the City of Ljubljana, we strive to develop cycling and are constantly implementing measures that contribute to this: from designing, maintaining and building cycling infrastructure, through introducing and operating services to encourage cycling, to promoting cycling, especially for everyday travel around the city. We are dedicated to education and raising awareness on this topic, aiming to shift travel habits toward more sustainable choices.

All the measures already implemented have significantly contributed to an increase in the share of trips made by bicycle in Ljubljana over the past 10 years: from 11% for internal trips within the City of Ljubljana in 2013 to 13.7% in 2024. You can read more about this in the Survey of Travel Habits of Residents of the City of Ljubljana and the Ljubljana Urban Region here.

Cycling is undoubtedly one of the sustainable mobility options that helps reduce the number of cars in Ljubljana, which is why we are committed to upgrading, improving, and supporting it.

So far, 450 kilometres of cycling surfaces, with more to come

In Ljubljana, we have around 450 kilometres of constructed or marked cycling surfaces of various types and categories of cycling infrastructure.

We are making extensive investments in the reconstruction and renovation of roads and public spaces, giving more space and priority to pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users and greenery.

Bicycle rental systems BicikeLJ and Nomago

Together with a private partner, we operate, maintain, and expand the BicikeLJ bicycle rental system (currently there are 86 stops and 860 bicycles in the system, with the first hour of rental free of charge), also in cooperation with private providers; in addition, the Nomago e-bike rental system has been operating in Ljubljana since 2022.

Sports and recreational surfaces and cycling training areas

We design sports and recreational surfaces and training grounds for cycling and other self-propelled means of transport (scooters, skateboards, rollerskates, rollerblades): Ljubljana has eight bike parks, including a bike park in Podutik, a BMX park and a downhill training ground at Golovec, among others.

Secure bicycle storage and numerous bicycle stands

In 2022, we introduced a secure bicycle storage facility in the Congress Square parking garage. Additionally, numerous bicycle stands are available in public areas throughout Ljubljana, providing parking and locking space for around ten thousand bicycles.

Cycling as part of the development strategies of Ljubljana and the Ljubljana Urban Region

Cycling is an important element of the key strategic documents on sustainable mobility – the integrated transport strategies of the City of Ljubljana and the Ljubljana Urban Region. The preparation of a new Integrated Transport Strategy for the City of Ljubljana is underway, within which, through an inclusive process, we are also designing measures to further promote and develop cycling in Ljubljana and the region.

We are also cooperating with the state regarding the placement of state cycling connections in the area of the City of Ljubljana and are planning the establishment and renovation of several cycling surfaces within the City of Ljubljana, all within the framework of the Agreement for the Development of Regions and other tenders or calls through which we will co-finance the implementation of projects.

Ranking of the 20 most cyclist-friendly cities in the world and the international cycling congress Velo-city

We are proud that Ljubljana, European Green Capital 2016 and Best European Green Capital 2021, has been ranked among the 20 most cyclist-friendly cities in the world by the Copenhagenize Index three times in a row.

In 2022, we hosted the internationally renowned cycling congress Velo-city, with the central theme »Cycle – Create Change«, which further contributed to the recognition of cycling and Ljubljana as an (increasingly) cyclist-friendly city.

Cycling relay with a purpose

The purpose of the international Relay for Climate Justice is to encourage cities and decision-makers to implement cycling measures that improve pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly infrastructure. The relay arrived from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, where the conference was held last year, and will conclude in Belém, Brazil, the host city for this year’s conference. In Slovenia, between 22 and 26 July, participants stopped in Ljubljana, Novo mesto, Postojna and Nova Gorica.
