European tap water tasting
The international organization EurEau launched the first European tap water tasting, which also included water from the drinking fountain on Congress Square. In Ljubljana, we drink water that does not require any pre-treatment – which is a real rarity in Europe.
As part of celebrations of EurEau's 50th anniversary, eleven tap water samples from across Europe were tasted under the guidance of renowned Swedish water sommelier Gunilla Hultgren Karell. Each sample reflected the unique characteristics of the local water source and told the story of the region from which it came.
The message was symbolic and clear: wherever we travel in Europe, tap water always meets high-quality standards. The event celebrated the rich diversity of tap water and emphasized an important message: there is no best tap water – every drop is unique. Water meets quality and health standards.
Praise for water in Ljubljana
Among the fifteen water tasters, water from Ljubljana left an outstanding impression. It was particularly praised for its long-lasting taste, freshness even at room temperature, softness that remains in the mouth, and exceptional suitability for serving with food. It was assessed as »a good balanced water with a refreshing feel – a really good, classic, traditional water«.
On this occasion, the Director of JP VOKA SNAGA, David Polutnik, received an Appreciation from the Slovenian Chamber of Local Public Economy for the significant contribution to the promotion of the quality of Slovenian drinking water and its sustainable management. He said that »the participation with Slovenian drinking water at the event is an important recognition of our work and proof that we also provide top quality drinking water in Ljubljana. Drinking water from the water distribution system, which supplies most of Ljubljana, is not only safe, high-quality, clean and healthy but also sensory recognizable – which has also been confirmed by international experts. We are pleased that with our contribution we can draw attention to the importance of sustainable management of water resources and at the same time raise awareness that drinking water from the tap is an invaluable value that is not to be taken for granted, so we must protect and preserve it for future generations«.
