Film classics at the Open-air Cinema on Congress Square
From 25 to 28 August, we invite you to the Open-air Cinema at Congress Square, the final summer venue of Kinodvor City Cinema this year. At one of Ljubljana’s central squares, you can enjoy film classics every evening at 20:30, free of charge.
On Monday, 25 August, the Open-air Cinema at Congress Square opens with The Gold Rush (1925), a newly restored version of Charles Chaplin’s most successful film, which is being screened in over five hundred cinemas across seventy countries on the centenary of its premiere.
On Tuesday, 26 August, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, 1975) will be shown on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. In their second feature film, the Monty Pythons gleefully mock the clichés of historical dramas, mythical heroism, educational films, and even subtitles.
Wednesday, 27 August, brings The Great Adventure (La Grande vadrouille, Gérard Oury, 1966), a hilarious adventure featuring the legendary duo Louis de Funès and Bourvil, the film was the most watched in France for more than thirty years and remains one of the most popular French comedies of all time.
On Thursday, 28 August, we will bid farewell to the annual cinema with Jaws, which turns fifty this year. After the summer of 1975, beaches and Hollywood were never quite the same.
The films will be screened daily at 20:30 in the original language with Slovenian subtitles; The Great Adventure will also include English subtitles. Admission is free. Screenings will take place even in case of rain.
Free screenings every year at Congress Square
With the support of the City of Ljubljana, Ljubljana Tourism and partners, Kinodvor offers residents and visitors free screenings of highlights of the seventh art at the Open-air Cinema on Congress Square. Selected films are dedicated to important anniversaries and events in the city and in cinema. Film nights on Congress Square are a unique community experience, where more than two thousand people share magical film moments, while Kinodvor reaches new audiences and provides broad access to film content. By scheduling the Open-air Cinema on Congress Square in the last week of August, we reach visitors returning from their holidays – eager for cultural content. In this way, we round off a season of summer pampering and return to the cosy setting of the cinema at Kolodvorska 13, where the film programme resumes on 3 August after the summer maintenance break.
