Ganga – elephant ambassador in the city centre

We invite you to visit the photographic and educational exhibition Ganga – Ambassador of Elephants for 50 Years on Gallus Embankment, on display until 29 August. The exhibition is dedicated to one of the most recognizable residents of the Ljubljana ZOO – the Asian elephant Ganga.

The exhibition of Ganga’s photographs will move to the ZOO on 30 August.

Learn about Ganga's life story

On panels along the Ljubljanica River, visitors can learn about Ganga's life story – from her arrival from India in 1977 to her daily care, training, and life alongside people. »She came to us as an adorable two-year-old cub from India. Since then, she has grown into the first lady of the Ljubljana ZOO, the elder among its animal residents, a favourite of visitors without exception, and our longest-serving employee,« notes Barbara Mihelič, Director of the Ljubljana ZOO, on the occasion of her anniversary.

Exhibition highlights the significance of elephants in the wild

The exhibition shines a light on the importance of elephants in nature, their endangered status, their symbolism throughout history, and the efforts of the Ljubljana ZOO and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) in species preservation.

Ljubljana ZOO expands its mission into the broader urban area

By setting up an exhibition along the Ljubljanica River, the Ljubljana ZOO wants to expand its mission beyond its grounds and into the wider urban space, where it can more directly appeal to the public to respect nature and endangered species.

Ganga's birthday party

On 16 August, we invite you to celebrate Ganga's birthday at the Ljubljana ZOO. Enjoy a full day of games, creative workshops, hanging out with the keepers, and learning something new about elephants. On Ganga's birthday, the Ljubljana ZOO will also release a special book.
