Ljubljana first time among the 40 most sustainable cities in the world

As part of the international program for the comparative analysis of sustainable destinations, Ljubljana has, for the first time, ranked among the 40 best cities in the world, and among medium-sized cities, where our city belongs, we secured 7th place. With this result, we have significantly exceeded the average of Central and Southern Europe.

Evaluation based on 76 quantitative and qualitative indicators

The Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS Index), an international program for the comparative analysis of sustainable destinations organized by the Global Destination Sustainability Movement, is designed to measure, compare and improve the sustainable development of destinations. It analyses sustainability strategies, action plans and initiatives of destination management organizations, convention bureaus, municipalities, regional tourism organizations and national tourism organizations. Their sustainability efforts are assessed based on 76 quantitative and qualitative indicators across four areas: environmental, social, destination management and tourism providers.

Among over 80 destinations, in 39th place

In this year’s evaluation, Ljubljana achieved a score of 70.76%, which is 6.6% higher than last year, placing it in 39th position. Among the 40 most sustainable cities in the world, those that are recognized as leaders in sustainability and regenerative practices are selected, having shown exceptional efforts to create a positive impact on the city, its residents and visitors.
This year’s comparative analysis included more than 80 destinations, with the Finnish capital Helsinki taking first place, followed by Swedish Göteborg, the Danish cities of København and Aalborg, and Glasgow in Scotland. Among medium-sized cities, where the Slovenian capital belongs, it ranked 7th. With this result, it has significantly surpassed the average of Central and Southern Europe (65%), and is just under 1% above the average of Northern Europe (70%), which traditionally ranks among the global leaders in sustainable destinations.

In the sustainability improvement program since 2018

The GDS Index is not a certification or quality mark, but a program for improving sustainability, assessing and accelerating the progress of destinations on the path toward regenerative tourism. Destinations participating in the program demonstrate their commitment to environmental, social, and economic well-being, which enhances their reputation and attracts responsible visitors and event organizers. Ljubljana has participated in the program since 2018 and achieved a score of 45.14% in its first evaluation.
