Mission 100: LPP and Energetika Ljubljana together for cleaner air

As part of the Mission 100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030, the public passenger transport company LPP and the public energy company Energetika Ljubljana successfully introduced the first city bus powered by 100% biomethane, thus starting a new phase of the transition to carbon-neutral public mobility in Ljubljana.

LPP and Energetika Ljubljana have significantly enhanced their contribution to an environmentally sustainable future in Ljubljana. As part of the goals of the Mission 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030, we converted the first bus from the existing LPP fleet running on compressed natural gas (CNG or methane) by replacing its original fuel with biomethane. This made the vehicle carbon neutral, which represents an important milestone on the path to the green transformation of urban passenger transport.

Biomethane is of renewable origin

Biomethane is chemically identical to natural gas, but it is of renewable origin. Biomethane comes from biogas, which is produced in anaerobic processes during the decomposition of organic matter (e.g., agricultural, biological and industrial waste and raw materials). By including biomethane in the system, we are gradually reducing the carbon footprint of urban passenger transport by also utilizing the infrastructure in place, i.e., the gas pipeline network, filling stations and buses, without additional investments or the need to replace existing buses. We will gradually enable other vehicles from the current methane bus fleet to switch their energy source, making them even more environmentally friendly.

Hydrogen buses this year and electric buses next year

Our efforts don't stop there. This year we expect the delivery of eight hydrogen buses, and next year as many as 25 electric buses, bringing us even closer to our goal of carbon neutrality.

Implementing commitments to reduce the carbon footprint in Ljubljana

This breakthrough is the result of a partnership between two public companies from the Public Holding Ljubljana, Energetika Ljubljana and LPP, which, through their development activities, significantly contribute to the implementation of commitments to reduce the carbon footprint in Ljubljana.
We invite all residents and visitors to the city to choose to travel by bus as often as possible. Every choice of public transport namely makes an important contribution to cleaner air and a better quality of life in Ljubljana.
