125th anniversary of the ljubljana street and square naming commission

In January, an exhibition dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the Ljubljana Street and Square Commission was held in the Glass Atrium of the Ljubljana City Hall.

The exhibition, which was organised by the Settlement and Square Naming Commission of the City Council of the City of Ljubljana, featured all the material regarding the establishment of the first Street Naming Commission of the City Council consisting of  "a board of five members: Ivan Hribar, Fran Povše, Ivan Rozman, Dr. Josip Vošnjak and Tomo Zupan who will be responsible for naming the town squares and streets". The first commission was established on 15 January 1889 at a City Council meeting.

The majority of the material was already gathered in January of 2009 for the 120th anniversary of the commission by the Historical Archives Ljubljana, City Museum of Ljubljana and the Settlement and Street Naming Commission of the City Council of the City of Ljubljana. For this occasion, the original minutes of the meeting from 1889 were put on display together with the web application "Streets of the City of Ljubljana"  which is available at the City of Ljubljana website and will be updated in 2014 with archival material by the Commission.

The goal of the Commission is to bring attention to a very important moment when the city councillors started recognising individuals and naming streets and squares after honorary citizens of Ljubljana and Slovenians who significantly influenced the history and development of the Slovenian nation.
