50 years of jarše kindergarten
Ljubljana’s Jarše nursery school was, when it opened on 1 January 1963, attended by 110 children, while today it counts 554 toddlers.
When it opened, Jarše kindergarten had premises in workers’ barracks, where it welcomed 110 children. With the increasing size of its surrounding neighbourhood, the nursery school grew alongside the growth in resident numbers. When the number of preschool children declined, the kindergarten’s premises in the Kvedrova unit became a pharmacy, adults’ dental surgery and an adults’ general medical clinic and space at the Tinkara unit was adapted to become a library. When trends changed again, and the number of kindergarten children began to grow once more, on 1 December 2010 the City of Ljubljana, with funding from donations, constructed two departments at the Kekec unit intended for children of the 1st age group.
Today, Jarše nursery school boasts three units: the Rožle unit, operating on two sites (Rožičeva and Pokopališka), the Kekec unit (Ulica Hermana Potočnika) and the Mojca unit (Clevelandska). The newest and most modern is the Rožle unit, which was built as a replacement building in 1997. The children in this unit enjoy above-standard spatial conditions.
This year, 554 children in the 1st and 2nd age groups are enrolled in 32 departments at Jarše nursery school, with 99 staff taking care of them.
To celebrate this anniversary, on Friday 4 January 2013, Mayor Zoran Janković welcomed the children and staff of Jarše kindergarten to City Hall.
