60th March along the Barbed Wire

From 5 till 7 May 2016, on the occasion of the City Holiday of Ljubljana, the 60th March along the Barbed Wire is taking place. Three exhibitions are celebrating the anniversary, each of them presenting in its own way the history of the march on the path where a barbed wire fence was erected during the Second World War.

From 15 April till 16 May 2016, at the open-air galley at the Krakovo Embankment the photographic exhibition »Path of Remembrance and Comradeship« is going to be on display, prepared by Timing Ljubljana in cooperation with Ljubljana Tourism.
The exhibition is going to show the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship which encircles Ljubljana, European Green Capital, with its green areas and 7000 trees and where for the past six decades with each person walking, marching or running the past meets the future.
At the City Museum of Ljubljana the exhibition »Ljubljana in the Barbed Wire Circle (1942-1945)« is on display till 22 May 2016, showing the special form of terror Ljubljana experienced during the Italian occupation in the Second World War.
The decision of the occupation forces to encircle the city with barbed wire, bunkers, machine gun nests and mine fields was unique in the invaded Europe at the time. The defence system of the city created an unusual picture of the city landscape and its immediate surroundings as the exhibition shows with interesting photographic motifs.
The exhibitions dedicated to the 60th March along the Barbed Wire are rounded up by the exhibition »Tomaž Alauf: The Passion Called the Path«, which is going to be on display at the Gallery Kresija from 25 April till 15 May 2016.
The author of the exhibition wants take you through the history of the March, show the milestones in the construction of the Path and with models present the monuments marking the route of the march. The exhibition features commemorative recognitions, certificates, plaques, pins and other objects the participants of the march have received since 1957 up till now.

60th March along the Barbed Wire

Again this year we are marking the City Holiday of Ljubljana, 9 May, with the March along the Barbed Wire, held from 5 till 7 May 2016.
The March along the Barbed Wire runs on the almost 35 kilometre long path around Ljubljana where during the Second World War the barbed wire fence was put up by Italian and, later, German occupiers.
Each year the march is traditionally opened by children from Ljubljana’s kindergartens who going to walk the path on Thursday, 5 May. A day later pupils from primary and secondary schools are to follow, and on Saturday, 7 May, the Path is going to be »occupied« by walking enthusiasts and runners of the Three-Member Team Run.
The Saturday part of the march is open to everyone as individuals can choose a distance from 3 to 35 kilometres according to their capabilities and fitness. Each participant can walk the desired section and those who complete the entire path receive a special medal.
On Saturday the participants of the Three-Member Team Run are going to run on a 12.5 or 29 kilometre long route in the membership and veteran categories, while primary and secondary school students are going to cover a distance of 3000 metres.
The Three-Member Team Run is a unique event during which the threesome has to constantly run together and the time of the last member crossing the finish line is taken into account. Such a competition encourages mutual assistance and solidarity among runners as the time of the weakest member of the team counts and so the other two members who are perhaps better prepared have to help, encourage and motivate him.
