A network of cities nominated as finalists for the european green capital

Deputy Mayor Tjaša Ficko and City Councillor Nives Cesar attended the founding meeting of cities, nominated as finalists for the European Green Capital, which took place in Copenhagen.

Establishing a network of finalists for the European Green Capital takes place within the framework of the event "Sharing Copenhagen: European Green Capital 2014". The idea for the European Green Capital started in May 2006 at the initiative of the then Tallinn Mayor Juri Ratas, who invited the capitals of the EU member states to help prepare the technical criteria for selecting recipients of the award. Ljubljana accepted the invitation and, together with the representatives of 14 other capitals, helped prepare the criteria for receiving the award as well as signed a special memorandum on the subject.

The Slovenian capital applied for the European Green Capital competition for the first time in 2010 (for the 2012 and 2013 awards), then again in 2012 (for the 2014 award). In 2013 Ljubljana applied again and was shortlisted among four final cities for the European Green Capital Award 2015. In addition to this, Ljubljana also entered the competition for the European Green Capital Award 2016, whose winner will be announced this June in Copenhagen.

More details about the European Green Capital initiative, together with a list of the European capitals that have already won this prestigious award can be found on the initiative's official website.
