Against plastic bags at Ljubljana’s markets

We are presenting the continuation of the socially responsible campaign »I’m not lasting, but therefore less annoying. I’m a biodegradable bag.« with which we want to reduce the use of plastic bags at Ljubljana’s markets as they are very harmful to the environment.

Survey results indicate the right direction

We are pleased the citizens are aware of the negative impact of plastic bags on the environment, namely, a recent survey has shown that the majority favours abolishing plastic bags and replacing them with environment friendly types of packaging (biodegradable or paper bags, totes, baskets …). As many as 85% respondents supported the decision to introduce biodegradable bags at Ljubljana’s markets. The survey was conducted by Ninamedia on a sample of 500 people, among them market visitors and people who don’t go to the market.

Promoting the use of own bags or baskets

Within the scope of the campaign we distributed biodegradable bags among vendors at the main market, and on Saturday, 21 April 2018, we were giving them out to market visitors at a stand on Pogačar Square.
We also explained why plastic bags are such a burden on the environment and encouraged visitors to use biodegradable bags for their shopping and demand them from vendors, that is, to use their own bags or baskets to further reduce the use of different types of packaging. We are going to continue the campaign by distributing biodegradable bags, we are going to give them out at the stand on 12 May and 2 June.

First self-service vending machine for products without packaging

On the occasion we also promoted the first self-service vending machine for products without packaging Bert set up in the Reuse Centre Ljubljana where buyers can fill their containers with bio cleaning agents, shampoos, several varieties of vinegar and oil. With its special attire made out of used plastic bottles it conveys the message that with prudent buying we can prevent the creation of new waste. Bert offers customers products which were produced locally following sustainable criteria, they are of high quality and sold at competitive prices. All of the equipment in the packaging-free market is made out of plastic packaging, which is melted and processed into plastic boards used to create furniture.
