Against the Rules – Lesbians and Gays in sport
The City Hall is hosting the exhibition »Against the rules – lesbians and gays in sport« until 21 February 2016, and a round table on the same subject was held on 11 February.
On Thursday, 11 February 2016, before the opening of the exhibition a round table of the same title was held at the City Hall. Organised by the Out in Slovenia Sports Society, the DIH Society – Equal under the Rainbow and the City of Ljubljana, and moderated by Ana Zupančič from the DIH Society, it included the following participants: Louise Englefield (Football V Homophobia, FARE), Milan Hosta (Institute Spolint), Simona Topolinjak (City of Ljubljana), Andrej Pišl (Out in Slovenia Sports Society, the DIH Society) and Tina Jeklic (Slovenian Football Association).
The exhibition in the main atrium of the City Hall, which was opened by Mayor Zoran Jankovič, presents the history of the LGBT sports movement and major sports events as well as some gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual sportsmen and sportswomen.
The round table and the exhibition are part of the international campaign Football against Homophobia supported by the FARE network and the City of Ljubljana.
The City of Ljubljana is paying special attention to all those who are especially vulnerable due to personal circumstances, and are consequently a target of prejudice and discrimination. One of such groups is the lesbian, gay, transsexual and bisexual community, namely, people who are, because of their sexual identity, that is, sexual orientation, often victims of discrimination and prejudice.
In the City of Ljubljana we are striving towards changing the wider social attitude towards the LGBT community to create an all-inclusive society. Therefore we are supporting activities that are trying to achieve this aim.
One of the taboo subjects is also the issue of gays and lesbians in sport as it is rarely discussed in the open. For this reason, the round table and the exhibition »Against the rules – lesbians and gays in sport« are aimed at removing taboos from the subject of homosexuality and sport, and drawing attention to the various forms of discrimination against sexual minorities in sport.
