Another successful year at the Ljubljana Castle

In 2023, Ljubljana Castle had just under 1,200,000 visitors, the railway funicular transported slightly over 540,000 passengers, 331 events and 432 wedding ceremonies took place on the castle premises throughout the year, the occupancy of the Celica Hostel was at 92 percent during the main summer months.

These are just a few numbers that show how successful last year was for the Public Institute Ljubljana Castle.
Crossing counters at the Ljubljana Castle recorded 1,190,229 visitors last year, which is almost 200,000 more than the year before; the funicular railway made 64,100 trips and transported 543,449 passengers, which is a good 26 percent more than in 2022. We held 331 events, 432 wedding ceremonies and another 983 guided tours on the castle premises. The share of foreign visitors in the visitor structure has also increased, now amounting to a good 76 percent. The tourist ticket sales statistics show that most foreigners were visitors from Italy, Germany, the United States of America, Great Britain, Croatia, France, Spain, the Netherlands and Austria.
Among other things, at the beginning of the year, we renovated the roof over the wedding halls and the stairs leading to the observation terrace, in the middle of the year, we designed two studios on the first floor of the Na Stolbi building and started offering accommodation, and at the end of the year, we completed the renovation of the Casemate Hall and the construction of the parking areas in the Castle Park. With added language versions, we brought the experience games Castle Escape and Friderik and the Hunt for the Prison Number closer to foreign visitors, and we offered all visitors a new family guide Friderik and the Castle Secret and the picture book Friderik the Castle Rat's Tales. We had the sixth harvest in the castle vineyard and filled new bottles of castle wine, including pomace brandy from the castle variety chardonnay for the first time. For the renovation and revitalization of the Ljubljana Castle in the years 1969-2023, a group of architects received an award from the capital. We presented the public with a new video ad and an integrated advertising campaign One Castle, Many Experiences, and increased our activity on social networks throughout the year.
Hostel Celica, which has been under the management of the Public Institute Ljubljana Castle since 2018, celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. From April onwards, we recorded 80% occupancy of beds, and in the main summer months, an average of 92%. During the year, we held 120 cultural and artistic events there.
We named the new studios on the first floor of the Na Stolbi building Friderik and Eleonora (the administrative premises of the Public Institute Ljubljana Castle are on the ground floor). The new studios, under our management since the finalisation of works and in use since the middle of last year, offer four-star accommodation.
A total of 763 events of the cultural and artistic program, social and protocol events of other organizers, and weddings took place at the castle in 2023. If we add to this the 983 conducted guided tours, this testifies to the lively pulse at Ljubljana Castle throughout the year.
