Around roman ljubljana

Three renovated archaeological parks – the Roman wall, Emona house and the early Christian centre – enable direct contact with Ljubljana’s ancient heritage in the form of a circular path.

In total, the circular route ‘Emona – around Roman Ljubljana’ links up ten prominent ancient monuments, and explanatory signboards have been provided. On the route, the visitor is given a map of Emona, a special children’s guide to Emona from E to A, while additional sounds and pictorial information via the QR code system is available to your smart phone.

Along with programmes for domestic and foreign visitors (professional and tourist guides, independent sightseeing, the children’s route, QR code), Ljubljana is thus enriched by this contemporarily set out archaeological park right in the city centre. This modern showcase of cultural heritage in situ in the form of the ‘Emona – around Roman Ljubljana’ circular route is part of the Emona 2000 project for the 2,000th anniversary of the foundation of Roman Ljubljana which is to be celebrated in 2014.

Ljubljana is able to boast an extremely rich archaeological heritage and has been continuously populated from prehistoric times to the present. Roman Emona has a special place in the history of the settlement. Regarding the condition of archaeological parks and other finds that are scattered across the city and as such used to be difficult to recognise, the City of Ljubljana’s Department for Culture has spent some years investigating options for their revitalisation. I

n 2011, the department obtained European Funding (the Operational Programme for Strengthening Regional Development Potentials 2007-2013) and began to carry out the archaeological park revitalisation project, whose general objectives were to:

• set out spaces for an archaeological view of Emona
• conserve and revitalise the parks
• sustainable and comprehensive cultural heritage preservation and their connection to contemporary life
• revival of the monuments via programmes for various target groups

One of the central goals of renovation was the modern showcase of Ljubljana’s important cultural heritage, which will simultaneously enable new programme content to be carried out intended for the widest range of visitors. Renovation of the three archaeological parks and the remains of Roman Emona in Ljubljana was headed by the Department of Culture of the City of Ljubljana, and conducted by the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana and the Ljubljana Regional Office and Restoration Centre of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia.

Further details about the revival of the heritage of Emona can be found on the website of the City Museum of Ljubljana.

You are warmly welcome to stroll the route around Roman Ljubljana.
