AWAKE: recognise – learn – train – react – save lives

In the Simulation Centre at the Community Health Care Centre Ljubljana we have presented the AWAKE platform, one of the first clinically tested medical solutions in the world using enriched reality to train individuals how to handle emergency situations.

Recognising, learning and training how to properly handle and resolve emergency situations is thus transcending from the clinical environment into the wider public scope with the main purpose of preventing complications. With the enriched reality headset we can experience how emergency situations present themselves, how to recognise them and how to act, as the headset simulates scenarios which the trainees may perhaps never see or recognise in their everyday environment. And so, with the knowledge acquired during the simulations experienced with these headsets individuals can save lives.

»In 2004, we have started developing the area of learning trough simulations in the SIM Centre at the Community Health Care Centre Ljubljana, in November 2018 we acquired the mobile simulation unit SIM mobil, and the enriched reality headsets are an upgrade in learning through simulations. Part of any type of progress and development is also acquiring own knowledge as development is a play of intellects who have to anticipate the needs of patients and offer solutions in advance and on time to the professional and lay public with the intention of preserving lives,« stressed, at the presentation, the deputy director for development of research activities at the Community Health Care Centre Ljubljana and the head of the Primary Healthcare Research and Development Institute Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tonka Poplas Susič.

Knowledge synergy for saving lives

Companies 3fs d.o.o. and Iryo d.o.o. prepared, in synergy with the domain knowledge of professionals from the SIM Centre at the Community Health Care Centre Ljubljana, a simulation module for emergency situations which uses the headset for enriched reality HoloLens produced by Microsoft to transpose individuals into a real clinical environment where they can get fist-person realistic experiences. By using the headset two- or three-dimensional objects are inserted into an everyday space, for instance a hospital room with a hologram of a patient. The enriched reality simulation enables an individual to see certain health complications, the patient’s reactions and the consequences of (in)correct actions.

The simulation is intended for the academic, professional and lay public facing emergency situations on daily basis or even just once when handling it is crucial. These are foremost healthcare workers, rescue workers, firefighters, police officers, security personnel, teaching staff, parents, coworkers and friends who can experience emergency situations using enriched reality and learn how to act in such cases.
