The increase in cycling is, in addition to numerous infrastructural improvements and other measures, strongly supported by the immensely popular bike rental system Bicike(LJ). Since the expansion of the system in March 2017 with 13 new stations the number of rentals has increased by as much as 56% in certain months.

Since the launch of the system in May 2011 and until 31 June 2017 over 4.3 million journeys were registered.

Today the Bicike(LJ) system includes 51 stations and 510 bikes, and the number of registrations since the expansion in March 2017 has increased by approximately 5 %. The most gratifying data pertains to the number of rentals, namely, in comparison to individual months in 2016 there was an increase spanning from 25% to as much as 56%. In 2016 over 650,000 rentals were recorded and in the beginning of August 2017 over 540,000 rentals were registered.

Continued expansion of the Bicike(LJ) system

We are further expanding the Bicike(LJ) system due to strong interest and its popularity among users – this year with 7 new stations, with locations still to be agreed.

In addition to the expansion of the system we are promoting cycling with numerous other measures spanning from the construction of new cycling infrastructure to organizing events for different target groups and awareness raising campaigns.

8th place on the most bicycle-friendly cities list

Due to the improvements in the area of cycling the City of Ljubljana first made it onto the list of the Top 20 Bicycle Friendly Cities in 2015 taking the 13th place, and this year it improved its ranking: it took the high 8th place on the »Copenhagenize Bicycle Friendly Cities Index 2017«.
