Books instead of screens

At the conclusion of the National Reading Group Month 2018 we are presenting the project Books instead of Screens the City of Ljubljana is using to promote reading.

The aim of the project is to encourage reading in some waiting rooms of Health Care Centre Ljubljana units and by doing so decrease the use of mobile devices while waiting.

In the first phase of the project the books intended for reading in waiting rooms were donated by the management of the City of Ljubljana who wrote dedications in them. On each book they also placed a sticker with a short description of the project.

Further on we are going to add new books in the waiting rooms of health care centres and citizens who will start reading a book in the waiting room can take it home, continue reading it and then bring it back to the waiting room on next occasion.

The Books instead of Screens project is complementing the popular Library under the Treetops which offers citizens and visitors to our city a vast array of books and magazines at different open-air locations in Ljubljana in a peaceful and green environment, and the Library by the Water which in the summer months invites visitors of the Kodeljevo and Kolezija water parks to read.

Ljubljana, UNESCO City of Literature

Ljubljana is a city of culture. In 2010 UNESCO awarded us with the title World Book Capital and then in 2015 with the title Ljubljana – UNESCO City of Literature. UNESCO awards this title to a city with a rich literary heritage and a lively modern literary pulse, aware of the significance of culture and books for the sustainable development of the city. We are proud that Ljubljana is among 28 cities in the world holding this title.
