Castle Vineyard
On 23 April 2016, the last five plants of the red Rotburger variety have been planted on the south slopes of the Ljubljana castle hill, which gives the vineyard its final image.
The Castle Vineyard project reaffirms Ljubljana's title as a City of Vine and Wine, awarded by the International Wine Association from Paris Ville Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin.
Experts from the National Institute of Chemistry who also selected the white and red varieties picked the sunny and airy site of the vineyard, which is a precondition for healthy grapes and good wine. It features 1,050 vines of white Chardonnay and the red Rotburger.
This rounds up the castle wine story connected to the descendant of the old Lent vine, which is growing in the castle courtyard.
The first harvest of the white grapes is expected for 2019, and the bottling in 2020, while the red grape harvest is to follow a year or two later. The vineyard is expected to yield between 1,000 and 1,200 bottles of wine. These will be primarily intended for official functions and the castle wine shop.
