In recent years, Ljubljana has selected already four trees of the year and one tree-lined street of the year as part of our efforts to care for the city's trees. This year, we will expand the campaign and select both the Tree of the Year and the Tree-lined Street of the Year 2024. Once again, we invite the citizens of Ljubljana to let us know which tree and tree-lined street they think deserves the title.

The main purpose of selecting the Tree and the Tree-lined Steet of the Year is to raise awareness of the great importance of trees for our city. We encourage citizens to observe the trees around them throughout the year and let us know which one has a special meaning for them and therefore deserves to symbolically represent all the trees in the city the whole year. The trees are also beautiful during the winter, even when they don't have the lush green canopies as in the spring or the colourful leaves as in the autumn. Winter is a time of rest, and the trees need it, too, so they start to bud again in spring and make our journeys through the city beautiful. That is why we have decided to prolong this year's submission period for the proposals for the Tree and the Tree-lined Street of the Year 2024 and to announce them in spring when nature wakes up again.

Nominate the Tree and the Tree-lined Street of the Year 2024

This year, we invite citizens to nominate candidates for the Tree and the Tree-lined Street of the Year 2024. You can suggest any tree that is publicly accessible, regardless of ownership, but what matters is that it is special, whether in its grandeur, habitus, age, or it has some other special meaning for an individual or a group.
Proposals for the Tree and the Tree-lined Street of the Year 2024 will be collected until 16. February 2025.

An expert jury will select the finalists from among all the submissions, and the final decision will be left once again to the citizens. The winning tree will be announced on 22. April 2025, World Earth Day, at the end of the For a More Beautiful Ljubljana campaign.
