Claircity, Timon and Socialcar

Within the framework of the title European Green Capital 2016 and the European Mobility Week campaign, the City of Ljubljana is taking part in European projects in the field of sustainable mobility: ClairCity, Timon and SocialCar.

The aim of these projects is to promote walking, cycling and using public transport, prudent car use (several passengers in the car) and smart route planning.

ClairCity Project

ClairCity (Citizen Led Air Pollution Reduction in Cities) is a four-year research programme, funded through the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme. The focus of the project is to research individuals’ engagement and preparedness to change their habits which have an impact on air quality and CO2 emissions reduction.
Six partner cities and regions directly shape the project with their activities: Amsterdam in the Netherlands; Bristol in Great Britain; Ljubljana in Slovenia; Sosnowiec in Poland; the Aveiro region in Portugal and the Liguria region in Italy. Residents will get involved through an online game, a mobile application, city events and activities for schools and local communities. The collected information will be used to find an optimal solution for each city.
The project also puts considerable emphasis on the awareness-raising of residents with regard to the impact of air pollutants on their health and measures that reduce pollution and at the same time increase care for one’s own health. Waking and lately increasingly popular cycling are already well developed forms of city mobility in Ljubljana. The activities within the programme are aimed at further increasing their share as well as the use of public passenger transport.
The project is running from 1 May 2016 to 31 April 2020 and is coordinated by TRINOMICS B.V. from the Netherlands.

TIMON Project

TIMON – smart solution for safe and sustainable mobility without congestions is a project aimed at increasing traffic safety, sustainability, flexibility and efficiency of road transport systems by communicating and processing traffic and other data. TIMON uses an open platform and a mobile application to inform drivers, companies and vulnerable road users about traffic in real time without delays.
As ITS (intelligent transport systems) is one of the most important pillars of future cities TIMON can help establish appropriate open data bases. It also touches upon efficient energy and municipal utility services, mobility and accessibility and encouraging participation of the public in managing public spaces.
The project is running from June 2015 to November 2018. Companies TASS International and JP Ljubljanska parkirišča in tržnice d.o.o. are project partners, while the University of Deusto in Spain serves as the coordinator. Stakeholders in the project are mostly transport companies in the community and public institutions: drivers of personal vehicles, motorcyclists, cyclists, users of public passenger transport, companies and fleet management organisations. The value of the project is 5,605,213 EUR and is co-financed by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme.
A video presentation of the project is available on the website www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=5&v=qBj9AcsvnHM; a demonstration of traffic flows with congestions, that is, driving speed of two vehicles of the public passenger transport company JP LPT – test phase simulation TIMON-MOL is available at the website www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wEoBZkzMoA&feature=youtu.be.

Social Car Project

The SocialCar project represents an innovative approach to managing urban request for private transport in cities. It integrates publicly available data on public transport, areas of transport requests and data on congested areas by using innovative algorithms, ICT-solutions and the available infrastructure. The project will enable and encourage more passengers to share private vehicles (carpooling) in cities and promote the link with public transport.
SocialCar is a European project financed within the framework of the research and innovation programme Horizon 2020. The project is developing a user-oriented platform for planning, booking and integrated payment combining carpooling and other services with public transport. It brings together software and traffic engineers, business analysts, car sharers and public institutions from Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Luxemburg, Poland, Switzerland, Macedonia, Croatia, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Hungary, Spain and Belgium. The head of the project in Ljubljana is the Traffic Institute Ljubljana and the City of Ljubljana is taking part in the project by providing data for the operation of the platform.
