On 10 November 2016, the 5th expert conference of the Institute of the Regions IRE on sustainable mobility titled »Master Mobility Plan for Green Cities« was held at the Ljubljana Castle.

The conference attended by experts, political representatives and economists from across Europe was focused on the question of future traffic in cities and based on the European Commission’s White Paper from 2011 »Roadmap to a Single European Transport Area – Towards a competitive and resource efficient transport system«. The participants analysed current traffic conditions in European cities, presented good practice cases, innovative traffic programmes and technical solutions, and they also discussed promoting new activities and projects in the field. The emphasis was on a comprehensive mobility plan for European regions and cities and finding solutions for increased mobility needs of the growing population with minimal environmental and territorial impact.
Mayor Zoran Janković also took part in the conference opening, Deputy-Mayor Dejan Crnek participated in the discussion on efficient mobility approaches in green cities, and the Head of the Department for Urban Planning of the City Administration of the City of Ljubljana Miran Grajšek, MA, contributed to the discussion on the Singe European Transport Area. Among other issues they underscored good practice cases in the field of sustainable mobility in Ljubljana, European Green Capital 2016.

The Institute of the Regions of Europe (IRE) was founded in 2004 by Prof Dr Franz Schausberger, former President of the Land Salzburg in Austria, with the main aim of promoting greater integration between municipalities, regions and enterprises from across Europe, and by doing so increasing the importance of regions and municipalities in European politics and strengthening their economic development. IRE carries out projects in support of regionalization and decentralization, provides practical assistance in development issues and proposals for interconnectivity at national and international levels. As a non-governmental and non-profit organisation it operates with the aim of providing funds and information for the utilisation of economic potential of European regions and mutual cooperation.
Currently, IRE has 120 members (regions, municipalities, cities, settlements and enterprises) from 19 European countries, with Ljubljana as a member since 2015.
