Drawing in comics

An exhibition entitled ‘Drawing in Slovenian Comics’ is on show at Ljubljana City Gallery until 16 October 2011.

The 'Drawing in Slovenian Comics' exhibition at the Ljubljana City Gallery, Mestni trg 5, is focussed on the role of drawing in comics here from its inception to the present. In this medium, drawing represents the most expressive and prominent tool with which comics have achieved their visual narrative expressive power. The exhibition includes a selection of almost all comic artists (84) that have marked comics in Slovenia and have used it as an aesthetic artistic segment of equal value within our culture, past and present.

The first retrospective exhibitions 'Drawing in Slovenia I' and 'Drawing in Slovenia II' held in 2009 at the National Gallery in Ljubljana and at Ljubljana City Gallery marked the beginning of the systematic artistic-historical and research analysis of drawing and this exhibition is a continuation of the professional treatment and exhibition presentation of drawing in the visual arts in Slovenia. After reviewing the role and importance of drawing in painting and sculpture, now it is the turn of the comic book, which in recent times has gained in value, meaning and social immediacy. Its directness is uncompromising, effective and dynamic.

There is also a rich accompanying programme alongside the Slovenian comic strip exhibition. You may take a guided viewing, comic workshops, a comic festival and get to know comics live. The programme can be found on the website of the Ljubljana City Gallery.

As part of the 'Drawing in Slovenian Comics' exhibition, the Trubar House of Literature also plays host to an exhibition of the art of prominent Slovene illustrator Marjan Manček.
