Earth-friendly municipality

The City of Ljubljana has been awarded the title ‘Planet Earth-friendly municipality 2012’ in the category of local authorities having more than 10,000 residents.

For the third consecutive year, the Planet Earth Society organised the ‘Planet Earth-friendly municipality 2012’ competition in partnership with Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre, in the following three categories:

- local authorities with up to 3,000 residents
- local authorities with up to 10,000 residents
- local authorities with more than 10,000 residents

The Commission that determined the award of the ‘Planet Earth-friendly municipality 2012’ title was comprised of representatives of the Slovenian Environment Agency, Slovenia Forest Service, the School of High Technologies and Systems, ZRMK Building and Civil Engineering Institute, Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre and the Planet Earth Society.

Commission members made their decision on the basis of questionnaires filled in by participating local authorities. The questionnaires covered four fields:

- energy saving
- forestry
- waste management
- public awareness-raising

The City of Ljubljana won the title ‘Planet Earth-friendly municipality 2012’ in the more than 10,000 residents category, Vojnik municipality in the up to 10,000 residents category, and Vransko came out winners in the up to 3,000 residents category.
