Electric Train Urban

In Ljubljana the electric-powered train Urban is starting its test drive in the middle of April. The environmentally friendly zero-emissions vehicle is going to operate on a circular route connecting main city attractions.

The electric train Urban is going to offer an interesting circular tour of the main tourist attractions: from the City Hall all the way to the Ljubljana Castle, Park Špica, Trnovo Pier, Krek Square, French Revolution Square, Congress Square and Prešeren Square. The starting and final stop of the train is going to be set up in front of the City Hall. The final route is going to be determined after the test drive.

Every hour on the hour, the fun, educational and environmentally friendly experience with Urban is going to be available to local and foreign visitors and persons with disabilities, as the vehicle has been appropriately adapted to their needs. As a novelty, the electric train is going to offer passengers rides throughout the year. The electric train Urban is powered by a 40 kW electric engine and will travel approximately 100 km per day. It can take on board 47 passengers, a tour guide and a person in a wheelchair.
The passengers can make a cashless or cash payment for the ride with the Urban train. The price of the ticket for children under 15 is only 3 euro, for other passengers 5 euro. Children under 2 years of age can ride the train free-of-charge.

The electric train Urban is a product of knowledge and experience of the employees of the public transport company Ljubljanski potniški promet and Slovenian experts in electromobility. It is comprised of a towing vehicle and three trailers with an overall length of 19 m. In winter the trailers are closed and have heating, while in summer the windows can open. The trailers with wooden chairs are equipped like city buses in line with sustainable practices of Ljubljana – European Green Capital 2016.
The train also has video and audio equipment as well as 12 photovoltaic panels on its roof, which help maintain its electric energy while driving. The electric motor operates on the two-phase recovery principle where engine braking, especially while driving downhill, charges the battery cells. The top speed of the train is 25 km/h.

The introduction of the electric train is part of the sustainable strategy of the City of Ljubljana and the company Ljubljanski potniški promet, which includes the modernisation of the LPP fleet with electric and other vehicles. Electric vehicles are going to operate principally in the centre of Ljubljana.

The electric train Urban was created by the company Ljubljanski potniški promet and Slovenian electromobility expert Miro Zorč at the company STOJA, inovacije in proizvodnja d.o.o..
