EU member state flags at Šubič Street

In the City of Ljubljana, we are proud that Ljubljana is the capital of an independent and sovereign state and that we are included in the community of 27 countries of the European Union. As Slovenia is holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the second half of this year, we have decided to express our affiliation with the EU also by temporarily erecting poles for the flags of all members.

On occasion, Mayor Zoran Janković said that Ljubljana, the European Green Capital 2016, is proud and happy to cooperate with all EU capitals, and by raising flags in Ljubljana we want to express our friendly welcome to all representatives of EU member states who will visit Ljubljana in the second half of the year. "The leadership of the City of Ljubljana decided on its own to set up flags on Šubič Street," said Mayor Zoran Janković, stressing that the policy of the Government or the National Assembly had absolutely no influence on the decision. He added that Ljubljana is Hero City, in which we are proud and grateful to all partisans who liberated us 76 years ago from fascism and Nazism. On 9 May, we solemnly celebrate this day, while, as the capital of an EU Member State, we also respect all the achievements of the last 30 years of an independent state. "At the suggestion of veterans' organizations in Ljubljana, we will erect a monument to the Defenders of the City of Ljubljana in 1991 within the framework of the renovation of the Youth Work Brigades Square, which will also mark the 30th anniversary of gaining independence and the war for Slovenia," the Mayor added.
