Eurocities 2016 Annual Conference

Mayor Zoran Janković and Deputy Mayor Tjaša Ficko, accompanied by their delegation, participated in the Eurocities annual conference held in Milan on 17 and 18 November 2016. Next year Ljubljana is hosting the conference.

The main topic of the conference was the sharing economy, that is, »sharing cities«, and Mayor Zoran Janković also took part in a round table where participants discussed new business models. At the plenary session, in which the European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström also participated, Deputy Mayor Tjaša Ficko presented Ljubljana as the next host of the Eurocities annual conference.
In Milano Ljubljana was successful in presenting itself as the host of the next conference which is going to be held from 15 to 17 November 2017. The exhibition area reflected the topic of the upcoming conference – circular economy – and was set up as a living room with furniture from the Reuse Centre (Center ponovne uporabe), visitors were offered the traditional desert LePotica and the theme of the conference was symbolically announced with pinwheels made from waste materials.
The EUROCITIES network of cities was founded in 1986 by mayors of six large European cities – Barcelona, Birmingham, Frankfurt, Lyon, Milan and Rotterdam – and now there are over 130 biggest European cities and 40 partner cities in the network with over 130 million residents. Ljubljana is a member of the network since 1995, and since 2015 it is also a member of its executive board.
