European mobility week 2014

The European Mobility Week, the largest campaign to raise the awareness about sustainable mobility, this year under the slogan ‘Our Streets, Our Choice’, will take place in Ljubljana between 16 and 22 September.

Despite the fact that we won the European Mobility Week award for our successful implementation of activities and measures in 2013 and have thus become the only city with two such decorations (Ljubljana received the award also in 2003), we still endeavour to raise the quality of life in the city. This time we plan to put in extra effort and upgrade our activities by introducing three times more sustainable measures as in previous European Mobility Weeks, while at the same time we also prepare three times more of new interesting events to complement the ‘traditional’ ones.

Throughout the European Mobility Week, which traditionally takes place between 16 and 22 September, there will be plenty of activities promoting walking, cycling and public transport as well as the usage of other more environment-friendly vehicles. This year the focus is laid on the revival of streets and activities which provide a quality utilisation of public areas as well as socialising, cultural, sport and spare time events. In this spirit also the Street Festival ‘Our Streets, Our Choice’ will see the light of day on 22 September, between 11 a.m. and 18 p.m. in Cankarjeva Street and its vicinity and Kolodvorska Street with the restricted access for motor vehicles. It is the first time that the employees of the City Of Ljubljana administration, public institutes and companies as well as members of over 30 other organisation actively take part in the campaign in such high number.

As always, the Ljubljana elementary schools and kindergartens are also joining in the mobility week with their rich programme.

In the scope of the European Mobility Week six sustainable measures are being prepared:

- introduction of a new urban passenger transport line – number 18: Stožice-Litostrojska-ZOO-Kolodvor (Bus Station Ljubljana);

- introduction of identity cards for persons with special needs;

- purchase of environment-friendly and methane-fuelled buses for the urban passenger transport;

- purchase of methane-fuelled vehicles for the City Of Ljubljana departments and authorities;

- construction of a bicycle lane in the Tivoli Park;

- renovation of the old footbridge (Ribja Brv) and the Cankarjevo Nabrežje embankment.
