Until Monday 9 July 2012, City Hall’s Glass Atrium is the venue of an exhibition of projects competing for ‘Emona 2000’.

In 2014, we are to celebrate 2,000 years of Emona, the Roman settlement on the site where Ljubljana stands today, which holds outstanding importance and a certain uniqueness for the Slovenian capital. As we would like Ljubljana in 2014 to be, as the cradle of the former Emona, as visible as possible, we decided that the extensive content and events that are going to take place should be united by a single visual image.

To this end, in March this year we published an invitation to prepare design solutions for the EMONA 2000 project, to which four artists responded: Maja Licul, Maja Gspan, Dolores Gerbec and Žarko Kerin.

The submissions were assessed by a project group led by Deputy Mayor Prof Janez Koželj (group members were Barbara Vajda, Managing Director of Ljubljana Tourism, Blaž Peršin, Director of the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana, Dr Uroš Grilc, Head of the City of Ljubljana’s Culture Department and Boris Vičič, Director of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia), who adhered to the following criteria in their deliberations:

• The visibility of Emona – Ljubljana,
• Usability and
• The symbolic meaning of the commemorative mark.

The commission has announced its decision that the greatest merit by all three measures was held by the design solution submitted by Žarko Kerin.

The exhibition of all of the design solutions submitted was opened on Monday 2 July 2012 by Deputy Mayor Prof Janez Koželj.
