Expansion of Žale cemetery
A new extension of Žale cemetery opened on Wednesday 7 September 2011. This is the second extension of Žale in the last two years.
The new part of the cemetery was designed by architect Marko Mušič, who conceived the cemetery as a city of the dead with a green fringe that protects against noise, entry portals, avenues and cemetery paths as well as classical and urn grave areas. The peripheral park with mounds is an area for scattering ashes.
During the gradual implementation of his basic ideas, in 2009 the cemetery for urn burials was managed with 1,685 graves, which has now been supplemented by part of the cemetery for classical burials with 1,273 graves.
This has included the necessary supporting management, cemetery paths, entrances to the burial field and communal points, a pavilion with a last farewell bell, a memorial grove in the peripheral park, an area for scattering ashes and a part of the peripheral green cascades.
The cemetery paths are tree-lined, which gives them the name of the green borders that mask the view to the burial area, with parapets and landscaping in keeping with the design and materials of the existing part of the cemetery. The entrances to the burial field are marked by specially selected verses by Kajetan Kovič, Ivan Minatti and Ciril Zlobec.
With this new part of the cemetery, which is intended exclusively for classical burials and extends over an area of 16,000 m², Ljubljana has acquired 1,273 graves, of which 1,258 are simple and 15 in a built object.
The project was financed by the City of Ljubljana with the total investment being €2,648,273.56 without VAT or €3,177,928.27 including VAT. The work was carried out by GP Holding d.d. Ljubljana and Kraški zidar d.d. from Sežana.
