Fable 2011

The Fable 11 - literary festival will mark Ljubljana's designation as World Book Capital with a number of premier literary events.

4 Apr 2011 - 22 Apr 2011, various venues

World Literatures: Fable 2011 - literary festival will be the last in the year-long series of events under the umbrella of the Ljubljana - World Book Capital project.

This year's edition of the festival, dedicated to Islam in modern times, will feature a number of world renowned writers, including César Aira, Niccolò Ammaniti, Per Olov Enquist, Christoph Ransmayr, Drago Jančar and Margriet de Moor. Visitors to the festival will have a opportunity to enter the featured authors' worlds through their performances, films based on their works, and the sounds, images and fairy tales of their home countries.

The dilemmas of Islam in modern times will be debated by experts from Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Turkey. The latter country will play host to a poetry and translation project entitled The International within the Local.

One of the regular fixtures of the festival is an international symposium, this year dedicated to the Slovenian poet Edvard Kocbek (1904-1981), whose perceptiveness in recognising the paradoxes of human nature and social action was often criticized in the time of Socialist regime, when difference of opinion was not respected.
