Facelift for gornji trg

The renovation of municipal infrastructure in the broader Gornji and Stari trg area has concluded, and as early as last weekend Gornji trg was the venue of a range of events.

The renovation of Gornji trg was carried out in the framework of a broader project to modernise the communal infrastructure in the Stari and Gornji trg area (Stari trg, Gornji trg, Pod Trančo, Vodna steza, Reber and Levstikov trg) along with traffic management. Just a few minor details remain to be ironed out, such as putting in place signage, water fountains etc.

The modernisation of the municipal infrastructure began in September 2009 (Stari trg) and concluded in August 2011 (Gornji trg). Renovation got underway in Gornji trg itself in June 2010.

The duration of construction was influenced by several factors:

  • complexity of construction due to the density of municipal pipelines;
  • archaeological research;
  • ensuring uninterrupted access to residential and commercial property;
  • compliance with the heating season (October – April);
  • weather conditions (rainy summer, long winter, cold days and nights in spring 2011);
  • renovation of municipal infrastructure from Ulica na Grad to the end of Gornji trg, which was not foreseen, but urgently necessary due to wear-out of vital infrastructure;
  • events (route to the castle).

Several companies were involved in the renovation work:

  • JP Vodovod-Kanalizacija d.o.o. (project management, carried out work on water supply and domestic water connections, waste water main drains and domestic waste water connections, rainwater drains and pipes and their connections to street gutters and downpipes from house roofs)
  • JP Energetika carried out work on gas main networks and domestic gas connections;
  • Elektro Ljubljana carried out work on the electricity supply network and building connections;
  • Gratel carried out work on telecommunication networks;
  • Javna razsvetljava worked on street lighting infrastructure;
  • KPL d.d., worked as principal contractor on the renovations having been selected in the public procurement procedures as the best-value bidder.

Gornji trg's facelift is just what's required for a range of open-air events as dictated by its architecture. On Sunday 11 and 18 September Gornji trg is to be the venue of a 'Medieval Fair'.
