“flame of peace” marathon

Mayor Zoran Janković hosted the runners of the “Flame of Peace” marathon at the City Hall on 18 August. The marathon commemorates the start of WW1 on 28 July in Sarajevo and concludes in Aachen (West Germany) on 21 September.

The "Flame of Peace" is a peace marathon in commemoration of the beginning of WW1 to encourage the participants to carry the message of peace throughout the Europe.

The track is 2.600 kilometres long, set over 12 countries and it symbolises the wish for peace in Europe. Flame of Peace has left Sarajevo on 28 July, and will end in Aachen on 21 September. The daily stages are between 40 and 65 kilometres long.

The project is implemented under the honorary sponsorship of Martin Schultz, President of the European Parliament.

The runners are placed in group of 20, who interchange among each other in smaller groups. A smaller group of Ljubljana's runners joined the runners before their arrival in Ljubljana and accompanied them to the

City Hall where they were received by the Mayor of Ljubljana, Zoran Janković, at 4 p.m.

The runners from Ljubljana began their run toward Klagenfurt, Austria, on Tuesday, 19 August, 2014.
