For fossil fuel use reduction in the EU

In the City of Ljubljana, we joined the Mayors to StopGlobalWarming.eu initiative, the purpose of which is to encourage residents of European cities to sign a citizens' initiative.

The primary purpose of the initiative is to influence the European Commission to include provisions in the legislation that will accelerate the reduction of fossil fuel use, encourage energy savings and increase the use of renewable energy sources, thus limiting further global warming. They want to achieve this by taxing CO2 emissions.

Collection of signatures

One million signatures of European Union citizens need to be collected to consider the initiative in the European Parliament. The collection deadline is 22 July 2021. You can submit your signature here.

The initiative works on the basis of the »polluter pays« mechanism and highlights the following requirements:

- Introduce a lower price for CO2 emissions, which would gradually increase

- To tax activities that have not been levied with CO2 tax so far

- Abolition of the free coupon system

- Additional taxation of imports from non-EU countries

- Allocation of revenues to European policies that support energy saving and the use of renewable resources

Care for the environment in Ljubljana

In Ljubljana, we adopted the Vision 2025 already in 2007, in which we committed ourselves to sustainable and environment- and people-friendly development of the city. We are convinced that this is the only path that leads to the future, in which the generations to come will live in at least as orderly and preserved an environment as we do. We are carrying out many projects and measures keeping in mind the quality of life of our citizens in a clean, orderly and green city. The culmination of our efforts in this area was the title Ljubljana, European Green Capital 2016. On the one hand, this title was a confirmation that we are on the right track, and on the other, it has given us an additional impetus for further development in line with sustainable principles. We believe that all European cities should follow these principles.
