Free screening of classic films at Kongresni trg

After a successfully completed Film Under the Stars, organized on the castle hill by our public institutions Kinodvor and Ljubljana Castle, we continue the season of outdoor cinema on August 27, 2018 with Open-air cinema at Congress Square.

The screen in front of the Slovenian Philharmonic will again display every evening from 27th to 30th August 2018 the best films cinematography has to offer. Kinodvor organizes the free entrance event in honour of important anniversaries in the history of film and the city and on the occasion of the cinema’s 10th anniversary this year, there will be another additional fourth evening of screening.

The Open-Air Cinema at Congress Square will open with a screening of France Štiglic’s On Our Own Land. This celebratory screening, under the honorary patronage of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, will be dedicated to Štefka Drolc on the 70th anniversary of the first Slovenian sound feature film. We will pay homage to one of the most influential and forever provocative films of all time by screening a new print of 2001: A Space Odyssey, an astounding masterpiece of sci-fi cinema directed by Stanley Kubrick. We will also join the international celebration of the 100-year anniversary of Ingmar Bergman’s birth. Summer with Monika, a sensuous and moving story about young love starring Harriet Andersson in the first of her many roles in Bergman’s films, is considered an early masterpiece and one of the most influential films by the great Swedish cineaste and master filmmaker. We will recall the spirit of 1968 with Monterey Pop, in which the pioneer of direct cinema D. A. Pennebaker eternalises legendary moments of music history at the famous Californian festival at the very beginning of the “Summer of Love”.

Kinodvor organises the admission-free Open-Air Cinema at Congress Square to mark important anniversaries in the history of cinema and Ljubljana. To mark the tenth anniversary of Kinodvor City Cinema, we have added an extra screening to this year’s programme and extended the operation of the open-air cinema to four days.

Films are screened in their original language with Slovene subtitles. Films that are not in English will be accompanied by both Slovene and English subtitles. Screenings are able to proceed in the event of rain.
