Hallerstein's armillary sphere

At the end of the Gruden Embankment next to the Šentjakob Bridge, we unveiled the replica of Hallerstein's armillary sphere.

During his life in China, Slovenian Jesuit, mathematician, astronomer, cartographer and diplomat A. F. Hallerstein designed the Beijing armillary sphere, a remarkable achievement in which, by combining the heliocentric design that was in use in Europe and the equatorial placement that was customary in China, he achieved a completely innovative and modern solution, as used in telescopes. The original is at the old Beijing Astronomical Observatory, and the replica was donated to us by the Embassy of the Republic of China in Slovenia.

The monument consists of two parts: the first is the base with an inscription in Slovenian and Chinese, and the second is the replica of Hallerstein's armillary sphere. The surrounding area is designed as a small platform, and the stone base is intended for sitting and socializing next to the monument.
